“I congratulate the prime minister on his election victory. I look at the debate that has erupted around the election, I read the evaluations of international organizations, and I see that nobody dares to question that this election was a free and democratic choice. With all the critical comments, no one dares to go so far, and they do it well.”

6. SOUNDBITE (Hungarian) Viktor Orbán, Hungarian Prime Minister:
“Although the outcome of the election is clear. The election itself was free and democratic. Still, there will be debates about your choice in Europe. Do not attach great importance to them. These are normal debates. This is the kind of debate we have in Brussels. When the conservative parties win in Europe, we go through the same debates.”

8. SOUNDBITE (Hungarian) Viktor Orbán, Hungarian Prime Minister:
“If the liberals had won here in Georgia, it would be the news everywhere in Western Europe today that your democracy is in top shape. But in the same election, the conservatives won, so debates are expected in the international press, which is the case after elections in Hungary or in any other countries. These do not need to be taken seriously. Dear Georgian friends, I congratulate you on the election result, and I wish your government, your country and your people every success in the coming years. You can count on Hungary’s strategic partnership in the future.”

STORYLINE:
Hungary’s prime minister Victor Orbán gave a boost to Georgia’s ruling party on Tuesday by recognizing its disputed election victory at a news conference in Tblisi.
Orbán, the first foreign leader to congratulate Georgian Dream, arrived on Monday in Georgia on a trip that highlighted his rifts within the European Union.
The EU said he doesn’t have any mandate from the bloc for the visit.
“I congratulate the prime minister on his election victory. I look at the debate that has erupted around the election, I read the evaluations of international organizations, and I see that nobody dares to question that this election was a free and democratic choice," Orbán said.
"You can count on Hungary’s strategic partnership in the future,” he added.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze thanked him for his support of Georgia’s integration into the EU and noted that the two countries show values and approaches.
Kobakhidze’s party has faced massive opposition protests demanding the annulment of its declared victory amid allegations of vote rigging helped by Russia.
Tens of thousands of Georgians rallied outside parliament on Monday night, demanding a new election under international supervision and a probe into the alleged vote rigging.
The protest underlined tensions in the country which lies between Russia and Turkey and where the Georgian Dream party has become increasingly authoritarian and tilted toward Moscow.
