STORYLINE:
Dozens of displaced from Jabaliya and Beit Lahiya gathered around pots with food in Gaza City, trying to get a meal for their families that fled from Northern Gaza where the Israeli army began its latest offensive earlier this month.
Children scraped the pot and women and men carrying containers pushed each other to get some of the food distributed by Red Dot Relife, a Singaporean aid group supporting Palestinians.
A tent camp has been built in a soccer field in the Yarmouk neighborhood, where hundreds of families that were forced to leave their homes and shelters in Jabaliya, are now living.
"We depend on Tekias (food provided by charities known as). Everyday we bring hot meals from Tekia. They (Israeli army) displaced (all people of) Gaza City. They displaced the whole Gaza, Sheikh Radwan, Jabaliya.” said Mad Allah Abu Zaid who depends on the food distribution to get a meal for her and her family.
The United Nations estimated that more than 60,000 people have been displaced from north of the strip to Gaza city in the last few weeks.
“They forced us out of our homes,” said Abu Zaid, who was displaced from Jabaliya along with her 10-member family.
“Those who were not killed by the bombing are dying from starvation.” she said.
Israeli forces have repeatedly returned to Jabaliya, a densely populated urban refugee camp dating back to the 1948 war surrounding Israel’s creation.
Israel has been carrying out a major offensive in northern Gaza for weeks.
Hundreds of people have been killed and tens of thousands have fled their homes. The military says it is battling Hamas fighters who regrouped in the north, one of the first targets of the ground offensive at the start of the war.
The United Nations’ human rights chief Volker Türk, said earlier this week that the Israeli government’s actions in northern Gaza “risk emptying the area of all Palestinians” and argues that “we are facing what could amount to atrocity crimes.”
The north has already suffered the heaviest destruction of the war, and has been encircled by Israeli forces since late last year.
