Israel launches airstrikes near UNESCO site as UNWRA banned by Knesset | DW News

Israel has launched airstrikes in and around the ancient Lebanese city of Baalbek, hours after issuing an evacuation warning.

Israel says it’s targeting Hezbollah. The region is known as a stronghold of the militants. Around 80,000 people live in the city, and many fled there to take refuge from Israeli bombardment in Lebanon’s south. Baalbek is known for its Roman temples which are a UNESCO world heritage site.

Meanwhile in Israel, the Knesset has passed a law which will ban UNRWA from operating in the country and effectively cripple its operations in the occupied Palestinian territories. UNRWA was established in response to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in the aftermath of the first Arab-Israeli War in 1948. Today it caters to almost 6 million Palestinians across the Middle East. Emily Gordine reports from the occupied West Bank.
