"Definitely we have reassurances (from Israel) that the airport is kept aside from the war, and even not just for the repatriation flights, but even after repatriation flights, as long as it is used for civilian use – this is what the Lebanese government is making sure that it’s only used for civilians."

"We have continuous coordination with the air traffic control. We have continuous coordination with the Lebanese government. The chairman is in daily contact with the prime minister. We have daily contact with the security forces at the airport. So all of this helps us in doing our risk assessment. We have parked some aircraft outside to minimize the risk of the exposure on the ground. We have increased the number of night stops for aircrafts so that also the exposure on the ground is minimal."

STORYLINE:
The images of commercial jets rising and descending serenely above clouds of fire and of black smoke over Beirut’s skyline have become ubiquitous.

Since Israel began bombarding the Lebanese capital a month ago as part of its offensive against Hezbollah, Lebanon’s national air carrier, Middle East Airlines, has become a local icon simply by continuing to do its job.

It is the only commercial airline still operating out of the Beirut airport – the only one the tiny Mediterranean country has – which sits on the coast next to the densely-populated southern suburbs where many of Hezbollah’s operations are based.

Unlike the bruising monthlong war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006, in which an Israeli strike almost immediately took the airport out of commission, it has not been targeted in the current conflict.

Capt. Mohammed Aziz, advisor to MEA chairman Mohamad El-Hout, said the airline has received assurances that Israel will not target its planes or the airport as long as they are used solely for civilian purposes.

The carrier conducts a risk assessment each day to determine if it’s safe to fly, Aziz said.

Some of the most dramatic images making the rounds on social media depicting jets landing in fiery hellscapes have been AI-generated, and Aziz said the plumes of smoke that appear in news footage are often farther away from the airport than they appear.
