"I’m here today to be able to have the conversation not of how to change 1701, 1701 is what it is. That is what we are going to be looking for as the basis for the end of this conflict. But what are the things that will have to be done in addition in order to make sure that it’s implemented fairly, accurately, transparently, so that everybody knows the path that we’re on. So, I think that has the confidence that we have to give the governments of both governments here, Israel and Lebanon, the people on both sides of the border and the international community that has to come in to support Lebanon"

STORYLINE:
Senior advisor to U.S. President Joe Biden Amos Hochstein arrived in Beirut on Monday to hold talks with Lebanese officials amid an escalating war between Hezbollah and Israel.
Hochstein met Lebanese Speaker Nabih Berri, where they discussed possible ways to end the ongoing war.
During a press conference Hochstein said Monday public commitment to UN resolution 1701 "no longer enough" and a mechanism must be put in place to ensure it is implemented "fairly, accurately, transparently."
Hochstein added saying, "1701 was successful at ending the war in 2006, but we must be honest that nobody did anything to implement it."
"The lack of implementation over those years contributed to the conflict that we are in today," he added in a news conference after meeting with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri.
Hochstein declined to go into details about what has taken part in ongoing negotiations and meetings with Lebanese and Israeli authorities.
He said the Lebanese authorities must make “brave and hard choices required at this time to benefit all of the Lebanese people,” adding that tying the conflict to a ceasefire in Gaza, as per Hezbollah’s conditions, is not in the country’s interests.
Hochstein met with Lebanese caretaker prime minister Najib Mikati.
