"We’ve received over 2,000 of our brothers as guests in the holy city of Karbala. The Imam Hussein (shrine administration) provided them with all the comforts and has prepared three accommodation centers for visitors (to host them) across the city. All these centers have been set aside for our guests and brothers. We’ve provided them with services such as food and drinks, as well as clothes and education services. The shrine (administration) has provided top quality services."

9. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Adham Nasiruddin, refugee from southern Lebanon:
"It was difficult, especially when we left Lebanon for Syria and they hit the border area. It was a difficult struggle and I wasn’t alone – I had my family and children with me. But we thank God for everything, we’ve only seen beautiful things. We came to Iraq and settled here. We were received at the visitors’ (accommodation) center by the shrines. They are providing us with full medical care and food, thank God. The way they received us was exceptional, but our hearts are in Lebanon. Our hearts are still in southern Lebanon, in Lebanon’s soil."

"When you walk out of your house leaving everything behind, your dreams, your school, university and your community – that on it owns creates pressure. But you are forced to leave because you want to be safe along with your family."

"The way they (Iraqis) dealt with us was very compassionate. When we were crossing, some of our children didn’t even have passports and they were admitted with their IDs instead. They were very flexible and they made everything easy for us until we reached safety along with our children. (Reporter asking: How is life for you here?) Thank God, we feel relief here. But God willing, we all have faith that we will go back (to Lebanon) victorious – if God permits so."

STORYLINE:
Lebanese refugees fleeing the deadly war back home have found refuge in the Iraqi city of Karbala.

Karbala is visited by millions of Shiite Muslims pilgrims every year during religious holidays.

The administration that manages the holy shrines in Karbala has provided Lebanese refugees with accommodation in the residential apartments that typically house visitors to the Iraqi city during religious occasions.

Ali al-Husseini, the head of media affairs at the visitors’ city, says they’ve received 2,000 Lebanese refugees so far.

"We’ve provided them with services such as food and drinks, as well as clothes and education services," he said.

Israel sent ground troops into Lebanon early this month.
