STORYLINE:
Israel’s military said it allowed 50 trucks carrying humanitarian aid from Jordan into northern Gaza on Monday.
Trucks were filmed driving at the Erez crossing in Israel in the direction of Gaza during a press tour organised by the Israeli government.
The aid comes as Israel faces more pressure from the U.S. to ramp up aid deliveries to the north of Gaza, where the United Nations says a renewed Israeli military operation has stymied the flow of aid and plunged the area into a deeper humanitarian catastrophe.
It is unclear where the aid entering north Gaza is being delivered, or if it is able to reach the Jabaliya refugee camp weathering the most intense Israeli offensive in the north.
Meanwhile Israeli strikes on homes in northern Gaza overnight and into Sunday left at least 87 people dead or missing, the territory’s Health Ministry said, as a large-scale operation continued against Hamas militants said to be regrouping.
The ministry said another 40 people were wounded in the strikes on the town of Beit Lahiya, which was among the first targets of Israel’s ground invasion nearly a year ago.
The U.S. is urging Israel to press for a cease-fire in Gaza after the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar last week.
But neither Israel nor Hamas has shown interest in such a deal after negotiations sputtered to a halt in August.
