“The death of Paul, who was killed by a motorist in Paris, resonated and aroused this emotion because this type of murder is indeed exceptional but every cyclist has already experienced violence on the roads. It could either be threats, pressure, endangerment, deliberate collisions… Every cyclist has a story to tell on the subject.”

7. SOUNDBITE (French) Alexis Frémeaux, co-president of the cycling association FUB:
“Today, what we’re hoping from the government is concrete action. First of all, we want them to tackle the issue, and stop denying motorized violence. When cyclists come to police stations to file complaints, these complaints should be recorded and then the perpetrators should be prosecuted. Perhaps the most important thing today is to get away from denial and impunity.”

STORYLINE:
The death of a cyclist in Paris has sparked a wave of emotion in France, with tributes paid in several cities and associations calling to end “motorized violence”.
The 27-year-old victim, Paul Varry, was allegedly deliberately run over last Tuesday by an SUV driver, who now faces preliminary charges of murder.
“Every cyclist has already experienced violence on the roads”, said co-president of cyclists association FUB Alexis Frémeaux.
The French transport minister, Francois Durovray, is expected to meet with cycling associations on Monday.
In a post on X, Durovray expressed his deep sympathy for Varry’s family and said that cyclists “have a place on the road,” vowing to address safety concerns.
Varry’s death has reignited national debates on road safety and cyclist protection as France sees an increasing number of cyclists in its urban centers.
