Counting has begun in Georgia in parliamentary elections considered crucial for the former Soviet republic’s future. Initial results are expected in the coming hours but both the ruling party and the opposition are already claiming victory.
Immediately after the polls closed the head of the pro-Russian ruling Georgian Dream party told supporters the party had secured another term in office. Exit polls from pro-government TV stations give the party a majority. But polls from pro-opposition stations put the opposition in the lead. The opposition alliance has campaigned on introducing rapid refoms needed to secure EU membership for Georgia.
