STORYLINE:
China on Monday said it was "deeply shocked" and "strongly condemns" the attack on its consulate in Myanmar’s second-largest city on Friday.
The consulate building in Mandalay has been slightly damaged by an explosive device, but there were no casualties, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told reporters at a daily news briefing in Beijing.
No public claims of responsibility have been made for the attack.
"China has lodged a serious protest with Myanmar, urging it to thoroughly investigate the attack, make all-out efforts to hunt down and severely punish the perpetrators according to the law," Lin said.
China is a major ally of Myanmar’s military, which came to power after ousting the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021 but is now fighting fiercely against resistance forces challenging its rule.
Separately, Lin reiterated China’s opposition to countries "provoking or threatening China’s sovereignty and security in the name of freedom of navigation" after U.S. and Canadian warships sailed through the Taiwan Strait on Sunday.
The U.S.-Canada transit came less than a week after China conducted large-scale military exercises surrounding Taiwan and its outlying islands last Monday, simulating the sealing off of key ports in a move that underscores the tense situation in the Taiwan Strait.
