STORYLINE:
An Israeli airstrike hit a car in the Syrian capital of Damascus on Monday afternoon, killing two and wounding three, according to Syrian state media reports.
The strike occurred in the western Mazzeh neighborhood, according to an Associated Press reporter at the scene.
It was not immediately clear who the target was.
State media quoted an unnamed military official as saying that the airstrike killed two civilians and wounded three others.
The airstrike caused material damage in the area, it said.
Video showed an entirely burnt out car and damage to a nearby commercial building.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said the person killed was not a Syrian citizen. It did not give the nationality.
Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes on targets inside government-controlled parts of war-torn Syria in recent years, but it rarely acknowledges or discusses the operations.
The strikes often target Syrian forces or Iranian-backed groups.
Israel has vowed to stop Iranian entrenchment in Syria, particularly since Syria is a key route for Iran to send weapons to the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.
