“We must have sixty or seventy thousand music scores here, from all genres. That’s the nice thing about it. We have scores from a sardana (Catalan traditional dance), a flamenco song, a piece by Shostakovich or Taylor Swift. There is a wide variety. As we’ve always had. You can find a bolero or a tango. And this variety, from traditional, classical to mainstream allows us to survive.”

“We’ve had most Catalan artists as clients. Alicia de la Rocha, Montserrat Caballe, Victoria de los Angeles, Josep Carreras or Paco Ibanez. A big diversity of styles. Some of them come more often than others. Because as time goes by, they stop coming very often because they have everything they need already. But we’ve had most people from music and theatre. (Daniel) Barenboim has also come here a few times.”

“I’ve come to Barcelona because of the enchantment behind the history of Spain. The most attractive aspect of coming here is to see history. When I saw this music store, even though I don’t know much about music, I came here to investigate. Because I find it fascinating. Cultural heritage is found in places like this one.”

17. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Jaume Doncos, co-owner of Casa Beethoven:
“This type of shops are like the Titanic, slowly sinking. The sinking isn’t fast because we are open many hours and we are located in Las Ramblas with many people walking by. And this allows us to survive. I think it will depend on when we decide to retire. We see the thinking and we know the final is inevitable. But we will look for the right time to close down. I wouldn’t want to close down because the ship is already sunk. I would like to close it down with some dignity.”
