STORYLINE:
Tens of thousands of Yemenis joined a recurring Friday demonstration in the capital city of Sana’a in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The protest on Friday comes as the region reckons with the killing of top Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in a battle with Israeli forces in Gaza on Wednesday.

Demonstrators were seen chanting slogans while holding Palestinian, Lebanese and Yemeni flags, rifles and placards.

The U.N. special envoy for Yemen said Tuesday that the Arab world’s poorest nation risks being dragged further into the military escalation in the Middle East that keeps intensifying and could spiral out of control.

Hans Grundberg told the U.N. Security Council that regrettably Yemen is part of the escalation — and he warned that repeated attacks on international shipping by its Houthi rebels “have significantly increased the risk of an environment disaster” in the Red Sea.

The Houthis have been engaged in a civil war with Yemen’s internationally recognized government, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, since 2014, when they took control of the capital Sana’a and most of the north.

Hopes for peace talks vanished after the Oct. 7 attack.

On Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led militants blew holes in Israel’s security fence and stormed in, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting another 250.

Israel’s offensive in Gaza has killed over 42,000 Palestinians, according to local health authorities, who do not distinguish combatants from civilians.

The war has destroyed large areas of Gaza and displaced about 90% of its population of 2.3 million people.
