This Palestinian people, they are alive and do not die, no matter how long the wars last, no matter how much the countries fight against us. The one who is fighting us is not only Israel, also America and the entire West is fighting us, even the Arab and Islamic world is fighting us. The whole world is fighting the Palestinian people."

5. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Somaia Mohtasib, displaced from Gaza:
"This is very sad and very unfortunate news. May God have mercy on him (Hamas leader, Yahya Sinwar). He died as a fighter. He died as a martyr and an honourable one. Contrary to what the Zionist spies used to tell the people, they used to say that he was hiding in the tunnels and among the people, but he was martyred while fighting them."

STORYLINE:
Palestinians in Gaza reacted on Friday to the reported death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, saying he had died honourably as a martyr.

"He died as a fighter, as a martyr, with dignity as opposed to what Israelis said about him hiding under the ground in tunnels and that he was hiding among civilians," said Somaia Mohtasib, a woman displaced from Gaza City.

“Thousands, hundreds, and tens of senior leaders were martyred and replaced with new leaders," added Saleh Shonnar, a man displaced from Jabaliya.

"This is the Palestinian people; they are alive and don’t die no matter how long the wars last. No matter how much nations fight us.”

The Israeli military said its forces killed Sinwar, a chief architect of last year’s attack on Israel that sparked the war, during fighting in Gaza.

Troops appeared to have run across him unknowingly in a battle, only to discover afterwards that a body in the rubble was Israel’s most-wanted man.

Israeli leaders celebrated his killing as a settling of scores just over a year after Hamas-led militants killed some 1,200 people in Israel and kidnapped 250 others in an attack that stunned the country.

They also presented it as a turning point in the campaign to destroy Hamas, urging the group to surrender and release some 100 hostages still in Gaza.

U.S. officials expressed hopes for a cease-fire with Sinwar out of the picture.

But eliminating him may not end the devastating war, during which Israel has destroyed much of the Gaza Strip and killed more than 42,000 Palestinians.

A statement issued by one of Hamas’ political leaders abroad on Friday tacitly — but not directly — confirmed the death of Sinwar.

It said that Israel is mistaken if it “believes that killing our leaders means the end of our movement and the struggle of the Palestinian people.”

When asked if the statement was a confirmation of Sinwar’s death, Hamas political bureau member Bassem Naim said it was not.
