STORYLINE:
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived at NATO headquarters in Brussels on Thursday. Zelenskyy was greeted by NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte who is chairing the NATO defense ministers meeting.
Zelenskyy has been presenting his five-point ‘victory plan’ plan to Ukraine’s Western allies. The plan is aimed at prompting Russia to end the war through negotiations. A key element would be a formal invitation into NATO.
However, NATO partners have been reluctant to invite Ukraine to join while the war is ongoing, and Zelenskyy’s request for an invitation puts the military alliance in a difficult position.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said Thursday that Ukraine’s place is among NATO’s ranks, but he would not say when it might join.
