STORYLINE:
China on Thursday announced the UK’s Foreign Secretary David Lammy will visit the country this week.
China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told reporters at a daily news briefing in Beijing that Lammy would start a two-day visit to China on Friday at the invitation of Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Mao said the two sides would “have in-depth communication on enhancing strategic, mutual trust and strengthen dialogue and cooperation in various fields” based on the two leaders’ consensus.
This would be the first visit by a senior UK official to China since the election of Prime Minister Keir Starmer in July.
Separately, Mao warned the U.S. over “creating obstacles deliberately disrupting” normal economic ties between the two sides,.
Her remarks came after a group of key U.S. lawmakers reportedly pressed President Joe Biden’s administration to block China’s telecom giant Huawei’s suppliers from purchasing American chipmaking gear.
