STORYLINE:
More than 80 Syrian refugees arrived at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport on Tuesday after flying from Beirut.
The evacuation was coordinated by the Sant’Egidio Catholic community and the Evangelical church of Italy, who opened a humanitarian corridor to help the refugees flee the country.
All of the passengers were Syrian refugees who used to live in southern Lebanon, with some of them coming from the refugee camps in the Bekaa Valley.
As part of the humanitarian corridor project, the refugees will take part in a programme which aims to integrate them into life in Italy.
