“Well, the very first time I saw Bruce in America was in New Jersey. I went out to see him play somewhere in New Jersey. And I wondered why they were booing him. Because I didn’t know about the Bruuuuuce thing. And I thought,’ What the hell’s going on? I thought they loved him here.’ And I’d never heard that before because they didn’t do it in England. When when I played in England, I had seen him in England already. But that would have been 78, 79. And then we met for the first time around then in Nashville, he came to see me play in Passaic, New Jersey. I remember distinctly sitting up in the balcony after the show and everybody had gone in talking about stuff, you know. So I’ve been fortunate to see, you know, I’ll stop in and see some of these shows over the years. I remember a really great night at the Apollo Theater. And that was the first one without Clarence (Clemons) . So that was like a very emotional night”

And I just always admire him and his ability to keep elevating his whole sort of take on life and the common man and the working class people and how much love he has for this country and how now more than ever in this very fractious time, he’s such an important voice.”

“I love arranging. I mean, that’s my favorite thing, you know? So I’ve always been arranging and making suggestions about arrangements and um and it’s easy, you know, once the records are done, you know what I mean? The show now, the records become an outline of what the show’s going to be, you know, and we’ll make adjustments from those songs for the show that are slightly different arrangements sometimes than the records and, and then see how they connect up with each other. You know, it becomes, you know, the script, if you will, you know, begins with the with the with the record. But that’s not the final product, really. You know, the final product is what happens live. You know, that rock and roll is about live.”

“I mean, I’ve been around the band many, many times and I’ve had the opportunity to be seeing them in Europe. I felt like this current tour had an energy and maybe it’s because the world was shut down. But there was nothing like seeing him in America at this point. It was nothing like seeing him in Europe. It’s an energy and a force that it was. I was just hoping to capture it on film. And I think ‘Road Diary’ gets close to that feeling of being in the pit feeling Bruce and the band play live.”
