Russian forces intensified their bombardment of Mariupol and other cities on Thursday, trapping hundreds of thousands of people, with food and water running short.
The heavy bombardment of the vital southern port city kept most residents off the streets and in shelters.
Firefighters were seen rescuing a woman from a destroyed building, and trying to rescue a seriously injured boy from the rubble.
The base of the local fire department was bombed, a day after a maternity hospital was hit.
One man was seen pulling his possessions on a trolley, after his home was destroyed by shelling.
The city’s State Technical University was also hit by bombs.
Temporary cease-fires to allow evacuations and humanitarian aid have repeatedly faltered, with Ukraine accusing Russia of continuing its bombardments.
But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said 35,000 people managed to get out on Wednesday from several besieged towns, and more efforts were underway on Thursday in eastern and southern Ukraine – including Mariupol – as well as in the Kyiv suburbs.
