Mariupol doctor recalls maternity ward bombing

The acting director of Mariupol’s maternity hospital that was hit by a Russian airstrike on March 9 has recalled the horror she felt that day, in an interview with The Associated Press.
The attack on the hospital was one of at least 37 Russian strikes on medical facilities across Ukraine recorded by the AP.
Russian officials have tried to sow misinformation about the incident, and suppress reporting about it, along with other atrocities committed in Mariupol, going as far as deleting photos and videos taken at the hospital from the phones of people fleeing the city.
Lyudmila Mykhailenko’s testimony, along with those of others, photos and video taken at the scene of the bombing in its immediate aftermath, and interviews with munitions experts who have analyzed them, contradict the Russian claim that there was no airstrike on Hospital No. 3.
The hospital was struck again on March 17, and four or five of the patients lining the corridors were killed, Mykhailenko told the AP.
With no-one to fetch the bodies, they were buried on the hospital grounds.
Days later, in despair and with a leg ailment increasingly making it hard for her to run from shelling, Mykhailenko and colleagues decided to leave.
At the first Russian checkpoint, her phone was wiped.
They picked their way through a minefield where a car had blown up the previous day.
More than two weeks later, they made it to safety in Poland.
