STORYLINE:
The scale of the catastrophic damage in the coastal town of Englewood, Florida, was clear on Saturday as communities began to pick up the pieces left in the wake of Hurricane Milton.
Many beachfront properties were in ruins while sand blown in from the shoreline and debris covered the roads yet to be cleared.
Floridians impacted by the storm spent much of Saturday either waiting hours in line for gas, trying to get home or starting the arduous work of cleaning up after the second major hurricane in the space of a few weeks.
Gov. Ron DeSantis said several fuel depots where residents could get 10 gallons of gas for free were set to open.
Milton killed at least 10 people after it made landfall as a Category 3 storm, tearing across central Florida, flooding barrier islands and spawning deadly tornadoes.
Officials say the toll could have been worse if not for the widespread evacuations.
Moody’s Analytics estimates economic costs from the storm will range from $50 billion to $85 billion.
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden approved a disaster declaration for the state and will visit on Sunday to assess the damage.
