It is estimated that one young bride burns to death every day in India because her in-laws are not satisfied with her dowry. Girls are sometimes driven to suicide when the in-laws demands for more cash or goods become unbearable. Worse still, young brides have been killed by the in-laws so that the young husband is free to marry again – and try his luck with another dowry. Although the government has banned the institution of dowry, the custom still thrives. But women are starting to come forward and speak out about the terror of young brides who pay dowry with their lives.
