(4 Jul 1979) RR7927: MOONWALK: TEN YEARS ON
Ten years ago on July 20th 1969, astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the Moon. The Apollo 11 mission was the result of a huge and expensive American space programme, under NASA – the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Early in the decade, President Kennedy announced the target of landing a man on the Moon, to re-capture American prestige following the Soviet successes in Earth orbit. The Apollo series continued until Apollo 17 in December 1972. Large quantities of moon rock were brought back to Earth, and many scientific experiments were carried out. Scientific research into these is still continuing. But the emphasis of space research has now shifted. Orbiting space laboratories, unmanned probes into outer space, and a cheap recoverable orbital rocket have become the fashion.
