Voters in nine European Common Market countries go to the polls on June 7th and 10th 1979 to choose a new European parliament. The 410 deputies are
being directly elected for the first time; previously they were appointed by national governments. It is also the first ever multi-national parliamentary election.
The European deputies come from Belgium, Britain, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. The new assembly wants to assert
more control over the policies and practices of the European community initiated by the Commission in Brussels.
