STORYLINE:
Florida residents are repairing the damage caused by Hurricane Milton and cleaning up debris.
The storm smashed through coastal communities, tore homes to pieces, flooded streets and spawned a barrage of deadly tornadoes.
At least nine people are dead, but many are relieved Milton wasn’t worse.
In Riverview, named because of its proximity to the Alafia River, a small bridge over a creek washed out, blocking the only access point into a community.
Riverview resident Renel Prophet said they were out of running water and electricity.
"We can’t go out…we don’t know how long, you know the city is going to take to fix the bridge," said Prophet.
Del Ockey, a part-time Riverview resident from Canada, rented a car and parked it on the other side of the bridge, making a run Friday morning to get gas and fix a chain saw that broke as he was cutting down fallen trees around his home.
Two planks over the now trickling creek are the only way he can get to his house.
The hurricane spared Tampa a direct hit, and the lethal storm surge that scientists feared never materialized.
