2. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Jason Wysong, Superintendent, Manatee County School District:
“Our school district has an amazing food service operation and so even as the emergency operation center asks for more shelters, we’re moving food from one site to another to be able to serve that meal for however many people walk through the door. And again, it’s really about our cafeteria managers and their staffs. They’re all here working. The managers at schools that are not shelters are also here working. And so it’s just an all hands on deck effort to serve every evacuee who’s here."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Jason Wysong, Superintendent, Manatee County School District:
“So as of this moment, we’ve got about 16 shelters open. As of 11 a.m., we were serving 8,500 guests. That’s likely to go over 10,000 today. And we have a room for everybody who needs a place, a safe place to weather out this storm."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Jason Wysong, Superintendent, Manatee County School District:
“So the school district provides the shelters, but our principals are serving as the shelter managers, and it’s mostly our staff that are working. So we have principals, assistant principals, teachers, our cafeteria managers are serving, preparing and serving lunch right now. There are lots of other agencies here to support both county and state. And we’ve got some folks from out of state coming in now to to help because of the large numbers. But ultimately, my crew’s responsible for making sure this works."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Jason Wysong, Superintendent, Manatee County School District:
“It’s not a hotel, right? So we don’t have private rooms and cots. And so you’ve got to, you know, bring you know, what you need, be prepared to share space with others and make some new friends."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Jason Wysong, Superintendent, Manatee County School District:
“So we wait until the storm passes and then residents will start to leave pretty quickly because they want to check on their own homes. We know that for this storm, there may be trees down, there may be roads blocked. And so, obviously, we’re going to operate for as long as the emergency management officials need us to. And then ultimately, you know, if there are residents who have lost their homes, then the long-term plan is the emergency management staff works on a temporary shelter location for them, because then our next step is to assess our damage and get ready to try to welcome students back to school as soon as it’s safe. And, you know, we’ve got power everywhere and the ability to do that."

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Jason Wysong, Superintendent, Manatee County School District:
“We’re operating one special needs shelter that that is on a full generator because of the medical fragility of of of those evacuees who are at that shelter. Everywhere else, we’re going to you know, we’re going to hope that the power stays on. And and, of course, if it doesn’t, we’ll deal with that as well."
