"I’m at a hotel in downtown Tampa right now. Hurricane Milton has made landfall in Siesta Key about an hour’s drive south of here. But here at this hotel, I can still feel the impacts of this storm. The rain pounding against the windows, trees whipping around in the wind. Some of the streets in downtown have standing water covering them. And you can see the wind just racing across those pools of water. We still have power at this hotel, hope that stays that way. The hotel is planning on offering breakfast tomorrow morning, it might happen, it might not, but that’s the plan. Downstairs in the lobby, there are families hanging out, playing board games, people sitting at the bar, having a drink and trying to wait out this storm."

STORYLINE:
Hurricane Milton slammed into Florida as a Category 3 storm Wednesday, bringing powerful winds, heavy rain and tornadoes to much of the Gulf Coast, including communities already battered by deadly Hurricane Helene.

The hurricane made landfall near Siesta Key, a barrier island of white sand beaches south of the Tampa Bay area, which is home to more than 3.3 million people.

Millions of people were ordered to evacuate.

The storm was expected to retain hurricane strength as it crosses central Florida, including the heavily populated Orlando area, on Thursday on a forecast path toward the Atlantic Ocean.
