"I came across the bridge this morning at 4:30 and started driving around and I, I was very happy because nine, nine, 15ft of storm surge on top of the 22 foot waves that were there, my police department sits quite a ways back. It would have been underwater between the wave action and the height of the storm surge, that building would have been submerged. So it’s nice to have a place to come back to."

"I’m going to say very close to 100% of our population evacuated. Helene definitely scared them. We’ve never had an event like this, a Cat (category) 3 hurricane. So this was new to them."

STORYLINE:
It was a “sigh of relief” when Police Chief John Cosby came across the bridge from the mainland to Anna Maria Island at 4:30 a.m. Thursday and didn’t see his community underwater.
“Very close to 100%” of residents evacuated this town ahead of Hurricane Milton, he said, after Hurricane Helene battered this barrier island community just two weeks ago, covering the streets with piles of sand like snowbanks from a blizzard.
While wind from Milton battered already damaged homes and knocked at least one multi-story home off its pilings, the projected storm surge didn’t hit here, he said.
Piles of debris from Hurricane Helene still line the streets here. Mattresses, refrigerators, stacks of plates — some scattered but others sitting in their heaps — created a mess, but not the barrage of hurricane-driven missiles so many residents had feared.
Hurricane Milton is now barreling into the Atlantic Ocean after plowing across Florida.
The storm knocked out power to more than 3 million customers and whipped up a barrage of tornadoes. Milton caused at least four deaths and compounded the misery wrought by Helene while sparing Tampa a direct hit.
