1. SOUNDBITE (English) David Baker, joint winner of Nobel Prize for Chemistry 2024:
"Well, I think it’s very exciting. It’s a great honour and I can’t wait to, you know, congratulate and thank everyone who’s contributed to this. You know, I’m really excited about the prospects for, you know, for protein design in the immediate future. And, you know, I think all the pressing problems facing humanity that I think we’re really well poised to tackle in medicine, energy, sustainability. And I’m hoping this prize can help push our work in these areas further and faster."

2. SOUNDBITE (English) David Baker, joint winner of Nobel Prize for Chemistry 2024:
"Well, you know, I’m really excited across the board. I think in medicine, I think there’s huge there’s fantastic prospects for making better medicines, think, you know, medicines that are smarter, that only work in the right time and place in the body, you know, much more potent vaccines. And outside of medicine I think the prospects for sustainability, for breaking down, you know, pollutants, plastics are enormous. I think there’s really exciting new routes to carbon capture and really across technology. So I think there’s really huge, huge potential. And it sounds a little bit, you know, kind of like science fiction, but you look at all the proteins that exist in nature and all the amazing things they do and you think, well, they just evolve by completely random chance, you know. And now that we can design proteins with intent, I think there’s just enormous potential."

3. SOUNDBITE (English) David Baker, joint winner of Nobel Prize for Chemistry 2024:
"I think one thing that is important about this prize is that there are generations of scientists who’ve contributed by solving the structures of proteins over many, many years. That compiled the data that the deep learning methods that are being recognised here for structure prediction and for protein design really absolutely rely on. So it’s this is really a recognition of the work of enormous numbers of people. And also, you know, they’re just so absolutely brilliant, wonderful colleagues, scientists, students and postdocs now who are really it’s just incredible privilege to work with them as we try and push forward on all of these frontiers."
STORYLINE:
The Nobel Prize in chemistry was awarded Wednesday to three scientists for their breakthrough work predicting and even designing the structure of proteins, the building blocks of life.

The prize was awarded to David Baker, who works at the University of Washington in Seattle, and to Demis Hassabis and John Jumper, who both work at Google DeepMind, a British-American artificial intelligence research laboratory based in London.

Baker designed a new protein in 2003 and his research group has since produced one imaginative protein creation after another, including proteins that can be used as pharmaceuticals, vaccines, nanomaterials and tiny sensors, the Nobel committee said.

Baker gets half of the prize money of 11 million Swedish Kronor ($1 million) while Hassabis and Jumper share the other half.

Six days of Nobel announcements opened Monday with Americans Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun winning the medicine prize. Two founding fathers of machine learning — John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton — won the physics prize.
