"So as far as the house is concerned, yes, it’s secured, but it’s just the water. When the hurricane of this type is coming right on you, it’s almost like a tidal wave ahead of it, like a snowplow."

"So we’re pretty close. So we’re local. And I feel better about it because if we went to Tallahassee or Orlando or places like that and tried to come back, it’s going to be tough because there’s going to be a surge of traffic coming back. Everybody’s going to think about the same time."

"I’m really happy that we get to get fed, that’s one thing. The rooms are nice, I mean, I keep about 20 people per classroom and that’s adequate. I think it’s very nice."

"We can stand the wind and we can stand hurricanes, but the flooding, no we’re not taking a chance on that."

STORYLINE:
The National Weather Service says that Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall Wednesday night and that much of the west coast of Florida is at great risk no matter where it hits.
A storm surge as high as 12 feet is forecast for Tampa Bay and up to 15 feet for points farther south between Sarasota and Fort Myers. Officials sounded urgent warnings for residents to evacuate inland.
About 1,000 people were at a school turned shelter in West Bradenton, Florida on Wednesday, waiting out the storm.
Mary Ann Fairman was there with a friend and said she was scared.
"It is well organized. It’s just a very bad kind of situation all around the inside, outside."
Tom and Phyllis Persson wanted to stay close to their home in Bradenton rather than go too far, hoping to get back to whatever is left of their home quicker.
"Everybody’s worried about the same thing. You know, if you have a home to come back to," said Tom Persson.
