STORYLINE:
Loud explosions reverberated over the suburbs of Beirut on Tuesday night and into Wednesday.

Three loud explosions could be heard over the city late on Tuesday, one of which produced a thick billow of smoke, visible even in the night sky.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning another explosion was visible on the city’s skyline.

A fire was also seen burning in the capital late on Tuesday.

It comes as the Israeli military said late Tuesday that Israeli strikes over the past 24 hours had killed 50 Hezbollah fighters, including six whom it described as senior commanders.

The Israeli army on Tuesday said about 180 rockets were launched from Lebanon toward northern Israel, with most intercepted.

Hezbollah began firing rockets into northern Israel the day after Hamas’ surprise attack into Israel on October 7, 2023 ignited the war in Gaza.

Hezbollah has vowed to keep firing rockets, missiles and drones into Israel until there is a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, where its ally Hamas has been at war with Israel for a year.

Israel says it will keep fighting until tens of thousands of displaced Israeli citizens can return to their homes in the north.

More than 1,300 people have been killed in Lebanon and over a million displaced since the fighting escalated in mid-September.
