"There’s no federal agency that is responsible for running elections in America. That’s something that’s left up to the 50 states in the District of Columbia plus thousands of county and local level elections offices. And because of that, we see a lot of variation among the states, in terms of how elections are run."

"There are some really fascinating examples of states that run their elections really differently than the rest of the country. In the presidential race, there is the example of Maine and Nebraska. While every other state awards their electoral votes to the statewide winner, Maine and Nebraska also award electoral votes to the winners of each congressional district. And that’s something that could be a factor in the 2024 race and could possibly even decide who wins the White House."

"In Maine and Alaska voters use a rank choice voting system where they actually rank the candidates in order of preference. That’s a method that’s become more and more popular at the local level, but Maine and Nebraska are the only ones that use that system on a statewide level. There’s also states that vote predominantly by mail."
