2. SOUNDBITE (English) Ricky Mijares, Tampa resident and business owner:
"My family evacuated to Fort Lauderdale. We didn’t want to traumatize the kids. These storms are nothing to mess with. Although I’m a Floridian, I’m used to it. My kids at their age should not be subjected to the fear that comes with these hurricanes. The winds are strong. It’s very loud. There’s a lot of water. And at their age, they just shouldn’t be around it. So it was in the best interest for my wife and children to leave and for me to remain to ensure the house is okay, ensure our business is okay and protect our property."

STORYLINE:
As Hurricane Milton bears down on Florida, thousands of residents are fleeing. But Ricky Mijares, a local restaurant owner, says he needs to stay behind to ensure his business is safe.

"My family evacuated to Fort Lauderdale,’ Mijares said. "We didn’t want to traumatize the kids. These storms are nothing to mess with. Although I’m a Floridian, I’m used to it."

Hurricane Milton dropped to a Category 4 early Wednesday as it churns toward Florida’s west coast.

The National Hurricane Center had predicted it would likely weaken, but remain a major hurricane when it makes landfall late Wednesday or early Thursday.

The Tampa Bay area, home to more than 3.3 million people, faced the possibility of widespread destruction after avoiding direct hits from major hurricanes for more than a century.
