“If you are being threatened by such neighbours with genocidal fantasies – of course Israel needs to act. That’s totally clear. And Israel must advance its defence to restore its security. Why am I pointing this out so clearly? We can’t always talk about the right to self-defence and when it gets specific then it’s difficult. Yes, these are difficult edge cases, but there is only one way of action for Israel and its people.”

“It was moving to see Austria standing with us in our most difficult time since the Holocaust. Leaders, who are here with us tonight, I ask you: put your money where your mouth is. Please – send a clear message to Hamas leaders. We will not transfer one Euro until you publicly agree to a hostage deal.”

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of people attended a service in Vienna which marked one year since Hamas launched an attack against Israel which started the latest conflict in Gaza.

Austrian Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler was among those who gathered for the event at Ballhaus Square on Monday.

During his remarks, Kogler said “if you are being threatened by such neighbours with genocidal fantasies – of course Israel needs to act."

"And Israel must advance its defence to restore its security,” he added.

Members of the crowd were seen carrying Israeli and Austrian flags and held up their phones to form a "sea of light."

Shoval Abet Plotzky, whose uncle Ohad Ben Ami was kidnapped by Hamas militants, also spoke at the event.

In a plea to Austrian members of government, he said "please – send a clear message to Hamas leaders. We will not transfer one Euro until you publicly agree to a hostage deal.”

While the event was being held, pro-Palestinian protesters had gathered for a demonstration in another part of the city.
