“Voting machines have been at the center of a web of conspiracy theories since the 2020 election, with false claims that they were manipulated to steal the presidency from Donald Trump. There is no evidence of widespread fraud or manipulated voting machines in the 2020 election. There were multiple reviews of the election results in key states that the former president disputed, and all those reviews showed the results were accurate.”

18. SOUNDBITE (English) Christina Cassidy, The Associated Press:
“When it comes to actual voting, most voters mark their ballots by hand, and then that ballot is put into a machine that it scans the ballot and count the votes. In some parts of the country, voters will use a machine that marks their ballots for them and will either print a paper ballot or a paper receipt that can be used in the event of any questions about the election. Election officials say there are safeguards in place to protect the voting systems. This begins with physical security, ensuring limited access and using tamper evident seals to make sure that the equipment is safe at all times. In addition, voting machines are tested before every election where test ballots are put through the machines to ensure the votes are counted accurately. And after the election, post-election audits occur in which election officials are using real ballots, put through the machines again to ensure that those votes are being counted correctly.”

19. SOUNDBITE (English) Christina Cassidy, The Associated Press:
“Underlying all of this is the fact that more than 97% of votes that will be cast in this year’s presidential election will either have a paper ballot or a paper record of every vote that is cast.”
