“There will be races this year that are so close that election officials will have to recount the votes to make sure they have the correct outcome. But don’t count on a recount to change the winner. It rarely happens. Since 2000, our most famous recount in the 2000 presidential election in Florida, there have been 36 statewide elections that went to recount in general elections, only three of them changed the outcome. And all three of those races were decided by hundreds of votes, not thousands. In fact, the biggest shift in the margin between two candidates in a statewide recount was just 0.11 percentage point.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Stephen Ohlemacher, The Associated Press:
“There are several kinds of recounts that can happen in an election. There are what we call automatic recounts where state law will require recount. Now, basically, if the margin is within a certain range, the most common ranges is one half of one percentage point, or 0.5 percentage points. Many states will have an automatic recount if it’s that close. Other states though, will have laws that say that won’t have any automatic recount, but candidates can request them and often the candidate has to pay for them if they request a recount. The laws are different in every state. We have a wide tapestry of laws and regulations that govern elections in this country.”

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Stephen Ohlemacher, The Associated Press:
“In 2020, there was a recount in Georgia where Joe Biden beat Donald Trump by just a little more than 10,000 votes. The recount didn’t come close to changing the election outcome.”
