"October is when they start the potato sowing. So people come to see and respect the cattle. They know very well how it (the weather) is going to be this year, if they are going to have a good production or if not, if there is going to be a drought. And that is what we are observing right now. For example, when the bull lowers itself, there is going to be a bit of a drought. We have to plant on the shores of the lake. But yes, if the upper part is raised, there’s going to be flooding. It’s going to rain a lot, more or less. That’s the meaning from our ancestors."

6. SOUNDBITE (Spanish), Ramiro Ticona, Bolivian Bullfighter
"No, here in Bolivia we don’t have this custom of killing as in Peru, Mexico, Colombia or Spain. In Bolivia you only see the traditional, the capea (playing with the bull). As you will see and appreciate the whole spectacle does not use banderillas (decorations hung on bulls), puyas (stabbing the bull), like in Peru. It is only capea (playing with the bull), it is only capea."

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of spectators attended a bullfighting arena in a village in the highlands of Bolivia to watch intrepid amateurs dodge fierce bulls, without harming the animal.
The event is held annually in the village to honour the Virgin of the Rosary, the patron saint of Huarina, some 50 kilometres west of La Paz.
It consists of a popular bullfighting tournament with the participation of 16 amateurs divided into groups of four who take on 70 bulls.
The event is organised every year as part of the village’s tradition in the hopes of a good annual harvest.
It is also a parody of the Spanish bullfight, but without sacrificing the animals.
