STORYLINE:
Vigils, commemorations and acts of remembrance were planned across Europe on Monday to mark the one-year anniversary of Hamas’ Oct. 7 assault into Israel that left some 1,200 people dead and sparked a widening conflict in the Middle East.
In Berlin, Alon Gat, a survivor of the attack, attended a memorial at the Chabad synagogue.
One year ago, he and his young daughter Geffen and Geffen’s mother, Yarden Roman, were dragged into a car at Kibbutz Be’eri when Hamas attackers showed up.
The family made a run for it under fire just before they crossed into the nearby Gaza Strip.
On foot, Alon and Geffen made it back to Be’eri, where Israeli soldiers had arrived. His wife was taken hostage but released in November 2023 in a ceasefire deal.
Gat, who’s mother and sister were killed by Hamas, called once more for help to free the remaining hostages.
"I lost my mother and my sister and I’m here because I believe that we can seize the opportunities, and we can save those people,” he said.
“The terror in Israel is still happening. Hostages are still in the tunnels after one year. I’m begging you- keep fighting for those people. They will get back to Israel with your help. We can do it together," he said.
The surprise cross-border attack, which caught Israel unprepared on a major Jewish holiday, shattered Israelis’ sense of security and shook their faith in their leaders and their military.
Its aftershocks still ripple one year later.
The war in Gaza rages on and Israel is fighting a new war against Hezbollah, which began attacking Israel on October 8.
