"We all saw what happened when the U.S. president and French president announced the initiative for a 21-day ceasefire, during which the UN Security Council resolution 1701 will be discussed. Israel bears full responsibility for the escalation. We are working hard to stop this aggression. Lebanon has made it very clear that it is ready to implement the 1701 resolution. Israel must abide by this, and if the international community wants to protect the region from slipping into a catastrophic regional war, it must force Israel to stop its aggression and impose a ceasefire."

STORYLINE:
Jordan’s top diplomat Monday slammed Israel’s ongoing escalation in its war on the militant Hezbollah group in Lebanon, saying it is pushing the Middle East into the “abyss of full-scale regional war.”
Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi made these remarks in a news conference following a meeting with Lebanon’s caretaker prime minister in Beirut.
"We are facing a disaster and a dangerous escalation that threatens the region,” said Safadi. “Israel bears responsibility of this aggression, the escalation in the region, and any new escalation that the region faces."
Safadi said that Amman backs the Lebanese government’s initiative to elect a new president and commitment to implementing United Nations Security Council resolution that ended Israel’s last war with Hezbollah in 2006, that would keep southern Lebanon exclusively under the Lebanese military and UN peacekeepers.
Other European and Arab countries reportedly supported the initiative as well.
"We will not a battlefield for anyone," he said.
"We made this message clear to Iran and to Israel as well."
