So we decided to come as the entire Syrian-Lebanese community of Buenos Aires to hold a small commemoration, a very humble commemoration. We knew that the entire Argentine society, which is also our society, would join us."

STORYLINE:
Dozens of people held a candlelight vigil in Argentina’s capital on the eve of one year marking the October 7 attack on southern Israel by Hamas militants.
During the vigil in Buenos Aires, each person held a candle to represent the Palestinian victims of Israel’s retaliation, and prayers were held in their memory.
Argentina hosts a small Palestinian community that has been widely supported by left-wing groups and social organizations in the past year, with many Palestinian flags showcased during protests against the government of President Javier Milei, an open advocate of Judaism and supporter of Israel.
One year ago, Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing 1,200 Israelis, taking 250 people hostages, and setting off a war that has shattered much of the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.
More than 41,000 Palestinians have been killed since then in Gaza, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not differentiate between fighters and civilians.
Nearly 100 Israeli hostages remain in Gaza, with fewer than 70 believed to be alive.
An escalating conflict with Iran — which began attacking Israel on October 8 and backs both Hamas and Hezbollah — threatens to drag the region into a far more dangerous state.
