The vaccination is starting, focusing on the most at risk, most exposed. 5. SOUNDBITE (Kinyarwanda) Jeanette, Kigali Resident:
"If I compare this to COVID-19, Marburg is a serious pandemic. This one kills its patients on the spot. We managed to avoid Covid-19 staying inside and working from home. But the actual pandemic is scary. We need to be careful with it, as it directly kills its victims."

7. SOUNDBITE (Kinyarwanda) Emmanuel Niyonkuru, Motorbike Taxi Operator:
"I got worried the very first day I heard about it. They said 90% of Marburg patients must die, which means that 9 patients out of the 10 confirmed cases must die. That is so scary. In our case, we are always very close to our clients while working. We managed to avoid COVID-19 with some measures, such as removing the glasses off the helmets to let our client’s breath out. I am so worried we might be the first ones to be stopped from working."

STORYLINE:
Rwandan health authorities will begin a vaccine study against Marburg Sunday as the east African country aims to stem the spread of an outbreak that has killed 12 people.

Rwanda, which received 700 doses of a vaccine under investigation from the U.S.-based Sabin Vaccine Institute Saturday, will target health workers and emergency responders as well as individuals who have been in contact with confirmed cases, according to the health ministry.

Health Minister Sabin Nsanzimana told reporters Sunday that the Rwanda Biomedical Centre had reviewed the vaccine shipment.

There is no authorized vaccine or treatment for Marburg.

In a statement, Sabin Vaccine Institute said it had “entered into a clinical trial agreement with the Rwanda Biomedical Centre, the trial sponsor, to provide investigational doses" for the study.

“Per the approved protocol, approximately 700 high-risk adults, starting with health care providers, will be dosed at 6 clinical trial sites in Rwanda,” it said.

There are 46 confirmed cases of the disease that manifests like Ebola, with 29 of them in isolation, according to the Rwandan government’s latest update.

Health authorities have identified at least 400 people who came into contact with confirmed cases of Marburg.

Rwanda declared an outbreak of Marburg on Sept. 27 and reported six deaths a day later.

Authorities said at the time that the first cases had been found among patients in health facilities and that an investigation was underway “to determine the origin of the infection.”

There is still no confirmation of the source of this outbreak.

Like Ebola, the Marburg virus is believed to originate in fruit bats and spreads between people through close contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals or with surfaces, such as contaminated bed sheets. Without treatment, Marburg can be fatal in up to 88% of people who fall ill with the disease.
