STORYLINE:
A plane carrying 40 tons of medical aid arrived in Beirut on Friday as Israel widened its ground operation against Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.N. refugee agency (UNHCR) are providing the aid that were donated by the United Arab Emirates to the Lebanese government, which will distribute it to the hospitals that are receiving the wounded.

Lebanese Caretaker Health Minister Dr Firas Abiad was at the airport to receive the supplies.

“It contains 40 tons of medical supplies, mainly trauma kits that will be crucial to support the hospitals as they receive the casualties from the Israeli attacks on Lebanon,” he said

On Tuesday, Israel began a ground incursion into Lebanon against the Hezbollah militant group.

Israel and Hezbollah have traded fire across the Lebanon border almost daily since the day after Hamas’ cross-border attack on Oct. 7, 2023, which killed 1,200 Israelis and took 250 others hostage.

Nearly 2,000 people have been killed in Lebanon in the past year, most of them since Sept. 23, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.
