4. SOUNDBITE (English) Naomi Watts, actor:
“I think the grief was the sort of center of the story. And that seems to be a little bit of a repetitive theme in some of my work. That story lives close in my world, having lost my father very young. And yeah, I think I just loved this idea of dealing with your grief with this major problem and then connecting with this other type of grief which is coming…”
(Bing’s barking interrupts the answer)
“I’m being upstaged again.”
(Reporter: "You’re being upstaged.")
“There will be plenty of that on the screen.”
(Push into Bing as he continues to bark, and howl)
“He sings as well. He’s a triple threat."
(Reporter: "I see that.")
“He sings on cue. In fact, there’s a story. At the end of every day or week that a cast member completed their work, they would send him or her off and he would sing.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Owen Teague, actor – on working in "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" vs "The Friend"
“Well, the ape situation was a little different because I was the animal in that case. So – which is actually easier. Although that we had a horse, well, we had a lot of horses, so that was like a different challenge. Although you could probably – a small person could probably ride Bing, being very large, you know. But it can be – it can be a challenge because they kind of just do whatever they want because they’re animals and, you know, that’s natural. The last time that Scott (McGehee – writer/director) and David (Siegel – writer/director) and I did together ‘Montana story,’ we had a horse who was incredibly uncooperative, like he was the least cooperative film horse in history. And ‘Apes’ was a different experience and I had a lovely film horse, So it’s kind of luck of the draw.”
8. Various of Carla Gugino

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Carla Gugino, actor:
“Bing is so huge, you know, And Naomi is very petite and I’m fairly petite. So you’re just dealing with this very large creature who does the exact same things as my little dog that’s, you know, 17 pounds and Bing is 150. So it looks very different when they’re doing the same thing. But no, it’s just a – with again, I have to say, some dogs are kind of crazy off camera, Bing was just very, a thespian through and through.”
11. Various of Bing
12. SOUNDBITE (English) Liev Schreiber, actor:
(Reporter: “Tell me about what brings you here.”)
“Naomi and Bing and Bill.”
(Reporter: "Are you excited for her?")
“Incredibly excited for it. Yeah, I hear it’s very good.”
STORYLINE:
Naomi Watts had no problem being upstaged by her canine co-star, Bing, as she walked the red carpet for the New York Film Festival of “The Friend.”
Based on the best-selling novel by Sigrid Nunez, the story centers around an author, played by Watts, who inherits a Great Dane that belonged to a friend that committed suicide.
Watts says she’s drawn to these types of stories.
“I think the grief was the sort of center of the story. And that seems to be a little bit of a repetitive theme in some of my work. It’s that story lives close in my world, having lost my father very young,” Watts said.
As for working with the 150 pound Great Dane, her co-star, Bing, began to sing as Watts spoke to the press.
“He sings as well. He’s a triple threat,” Watts said.
