STORYLINE:
French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed Friday some 50 heads of state for the 19th Francophone Summit.
For two days, dozens of heads of state and government from members of the International Francophone Organisation (OIF) will meet in France to discuss the future of the French language and major international crises, such as the escalating violence in the Middle East and armed conflicts in Africa.
Starting in the historic Château de Villers-Cotterêts, the summit will continue on Saturday at the Grand Palais in Paris.
The biannual event has not been hosted by France for 33 years and is expected to attract a large number of African leaders.
