1. SOUNDBITE (Korean) Youn Yuh-jung, actor – on discrimination her character Sunja faced in Japan as a ‘Zainichi’ Korean:
"Sunja has been discriminated against for so long in Japan that when I acted out the scene of her facing discrimination, I thought about how that feeling would be ingrained in her. She would think, ‘This person doesn’t understand me because my Japanese isn’t good.’ It’s like that for me with English. I have an inferiority complex that if someone doesn’t understand me, it’s because I’m unfamiliar with English. That’s how I acted out the scene – Sunja being a bit scared because she had already dealt with – she wouldn’t think it’s discrimination but rather, ‘This person can’t understand me because I’m not fluent in Japanese.’ (Like) when she ordered 30 but the store clerk thought it was three. Jin Ha, who plays a younger character, can’t accept (the discrimination) directed at his mother and grandmother. But Sunja was so used to the discrimination that I portrayed her as intimidated, scared and feeling small, believing it’s her fault that the person can’t understand her Japanese."
