“I don’t find it all that fascinating that it is the highest church tower in the world, it’s the building itself. The church also lifts my heart up to God. This is simply a wonderful church that invites you to pray and be thankful.”

15. SOUNDBITE: (German) Christos Kalokerinos, Ulm resident:
“It’s been the case for so long. So I don’t think it’s somehow bad now. On the contrary. There are so many other nice things in the Münster that it’s not really relevant. I think most people think so too, but of course it was still great to show off the fact that we have the highest church tower, because many people don’t necessarily know Ulm like that. But when people say wow, you have the highest church in the world and the highest church tower in the world, it was of course also great, I think.”

18. SOUNDBITE: (German) Torsten Krannich, Dean of Ulmer Münster:
“The Swabians, prefer understatement, they don’t want to tell everyone that they’re the greatest, not everyone needs to know. It’s enough if we know it.”

“Well, we’ll wait and see what happens first. Maybe a little longer. Maybe it will still be possible in 2026, 2027. And as I said, we also have a very good density of art and cultural highlights here in the city, including great events with great artists, so that we can inspire the guests who come here even if we no longer have the tallest churches in the world, but only the second tallest. But it is still the largest Protestant church in Germany.”

STORYLINE:
La Sagrada Familia’s construction has taken 142 years and counting.
One of the final touches will be the basilica’s “Tower of Jesus Christ”, the tallest of the cathedral’s spires.
100 years since the death of the original Catalan architect, Antoni Gaudí, the tower is projected to be finished in 2026.
As the tower’s completion brings the mammoth Spanish project one step closer to the finish line, it will also mark the end of an era for another church in Germany.
The Ulmer Münster in southern Germany is the world’s tallest church.
For now, anyway.
Still, the Ulmer Münster’s dean isn’t upset.
