STORYLINE:
A small town in central Thailand prepared for a sombre mass funeral on Thursday for the 23 children and teachers who died in a horrific bus fire while on a school trip.

At Wat Khao Phraya Sangkharam, the Buddhist temple in Lan Sak town in Uthai Thani province that houses the school attended by the victims, grieving relatives gathered during the day to make offerings and pay tribute to their deceased loved ones.

Up until yesterday Wichan Seubsaichan held out hope that his son, who was on the school trip, had managed to avoid the bus involved in the crash.

“Yesterday, I was told that he had not been identified, so I still hoped that my son had survived,” he said.

Today he makes offering of incense at the coffin of his son Ruetthawat.

Wichan remembers his 9-year-old son as a well-mannered boy who loved school and sports, and enjoyed participating in many activities since he was a toddler.

Six teachers and 39 elementary and junior high school students were on the bus that caught fire Tuesday on a highway in suburban Bangkok. It spread so quickly, only 22 were able to escape.

Police were investigating whether the fire was caused by negligence and filed several initial charges against the driver, including reckless driving and failing to stop to help others.

Police have not determined the cause but say the driver told them a front tire malfunctioned and the vehicle then scraped a concrete highway barrier.
