STORYLINE:
Students and professors from Argentina mobilized in the capital Buenos Aires to protest against the president’s threat to veto a budget increase for educational institutions and teachers’ salaries.

The thousands of demonstrators belong to public universities, unions, human rights, social organizations and opposition parties.

The large scale demonstration occurred amid ongoing tensions between the government and public universities, as the president enforces budget cuts as part of his austerity plan, which he claims is the only solution to inflation.

Despite inflation nearing 240% annually in August, the government has maintained the 2023 national budget and unilaterally increased funding in limited areas.

In September, the opposition-controlled Senate passed the University Funding Law, which proposes an increase equivalent to 0.14% of GDP for universities.

However, President Javier Milei announced his intention to veto the law, as it contradicts his austerity strategy.

This was the second significant protest against the far-right president, following one led by students and teachers in April.

The University of Buenos Aires, one of Latin America’s most prestigious institutions, reported that their staff lost nearly half of their salaries to inflation.
