STORYLINE:
Mourners gathered in Jerusalem on Wednesday to attend the funeral of an Israeli soldier killed in combat in Lebanon.

The military said that Captain Eitan Itzhak Oster, a 22-year-old in a commando brigade, was its first combat death since launching ground operations in Lebanon this week.

His father, Itzhak said that he “was a perfect and distinguished son.”

“Eitan fought like a hero, and stood side by side with his colleagues and fighters for a very long time, which made an important impact whether in Gaza or on the border with Lebanon, starting from the morning of Oct. 7 until this morning,” said military commander Lt. Col. Itai Barnia at the funeral.

On Wednesday, the Israeli military said seven soldiers were killed in two separate attacks, without elaborating.

Israel said it began limited ground incursions into Lebanon targeting the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia.

Israel and Hezbollah have traded fire across the Lebanon border almost daily since the day after Hamas’ cross-border attack on Oct. 7, 2023, which killed 1,200 Israelis and took 250 others hostage.

Israel declared war on the militant group in the Gaza Strip in response.

More than 41,000 Palestinians have been killed in the territory, and just over half the dead have been women and children, according to local health officials.
