“The issues are the same for everyone. Of course inflation is still an issue for people. It’s about the future. How is Europe going to develop? What happens with the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine? Now the escalation in the Middle East. The people have many worries. That’s why it is important, from my point of view, to provide stability as a responsible politician but also (to be in) the political centre, so that the radicals don’t get a chance.”

7. SOUNDBITE (German) Karl Nehammer, Austrian chancellor and OVP candidate:
“I made my position on that very clear. I made it clear to the voters what I stand for and what I’m running for. And on this September 29th it’s all about the mandate – in my case for policies of the centre and stability.”

STORYLINE:
Austria’s conservative Chancellor Karl Nehammer presented himself as the candidate of the "political centre" after casting his ballot in Sunday’s closely-fought national election, in which he’s facing a strong challenge from the far-right.
Nehammer said it was important to provide stability and be politically responsible "so that the radicals don’t get a chance," referring to his political rival, Freedom Party leader Herbert Kickl.
Asked about a possible coalition with the far-right party, Nehammer said the election was “all about the mandate – in my case for policies of the centre and stability.”
Austria’s far-right Freedom Party could win a national election for the first time on Sunday, tapping into voters’ anxieties about immigration, inflation, Ukraine and other concerns following recent gains for the hard right elsewhere in Europe.
First projections are expected for 1500 GMT.
